Should images be kept in the root folder?

    Hi,

Does it matter where images are stored on the server?

I know web pages are better for search engine purposes in the root folder but does it matter when it comes to images?

    Thanks in advance.

I think it doesn't matter wherever you've placed the image folder. Just make sure don't make long URL. So, better to keep in the root folder.. Something like: www/images/imagename

you can place your image anywhere and it does not need to be store at root folder. You just have to give absolute path to display them. With SEO point of view, always add alt tag with your main keyword to your featured post image. you will see the difference.

Images are usually kept in a sub-folder especially if the site has more than a few pages and/or images. Storing images in a sub-folder reduces the clutter in the root directory and makes things easier to find when you are maintaining your site. WP builds image folders usually by month in a default installation.

Alt tags and descriptions are infinitely more important than storage location for your images. Images are not embedded in an html file. An html file is a simple text file that provides instructions to the browser on how to build the page that you see. Pages that you see in the browser do not exist on the server as such, only the various parts need to build the page are on the server.
