Always Have a Back Up Plan

Google is fickle. Your number 1 site today - can always get trashed in a Google update tomorrow.

I always have a back-up site. Same topic, different keyword, different content. And I promote the back-up site differently than I do the main site. That way, if the big G decides for some reason that my site shouldn't be in the top 50, I always have a site either ranking on the second page that I can start pushing or a site ranking on the first page for a different keyword.

This gives me time to figure out what happened to my main site - without a big loss of revenue.

What is YOUR back-up plan if Google decides to drop your site from #1 to #100?

The site I'm concentrating on right now was doing well a month ago, then it dropped practically off the map for whatever reason. It took a few weeks, but is now doing a bit better than it was before the update. If you're playing straight, and in it for the long run, you should be able weather the storms that happen. There's going to be some ups and downs that should work themselves out.

When first started - that's what I thought. Until my site literally fell off SERPs. Because it was so popular, I had people stealing my content left, right and sideways. It was used to start new sites, posts in forums, etc. There was no one person stealing, it was all over the place. By the time I figured out what was going on and started sending out notices to hosting companies, it was a few months, not a few weeks.

Now, I'm in very competitive niches. I have webmasters post my site names in their headers, my content on 301 pages and recently, I came up with hundreds of crappy links to my site - which I didn't post. Revenue lost from one site being attacked - $50 to $100 dollars a day.

    So, yeah - a back-up plan is a must.

This is true but if your site old enough it will stabilize.

Yes, and in further time you can make from a backup plan a income plan and start the next backup plan , and so go on ... :-)

Having a backup site (same topic, different keyword, different content) is quite time consuming isn't it?

Wouldn't it better just to spread out into many niches, instead of having backups of each niche?

I agree on having a back-up plan, but mine is to have a completely different niche, business model and angle. The goal is to have 5-10 sites, some using CPA, some Adsense, some my own products, an e-commerce store and a gambling site. Either way, back-up plans are time-consuming as Burgers said, but you could outsource it to a virtual assistant (VA) or duplicate/spin your own content to quicken your time.

@Vivian - you say your content was stolen, were they not adding links to your site? Approach them and ask for a link pointing at your site. Duplicate content only matters if it is on the same website (I've tested this). Someone has copied my site identically (not an autoblog), with a hyphen in the URL being the only difference. I'm at #1 though, and they are nowhere to be seen. As they say, "imitation is the highest form of flattery"
