How do you feel about up-sells and down-sells ?

I'm wondering what you think of up-sells and down-sells when buying a product from a salespage or leaving a sales page. New pages popping up trying to sell more or a different, more expensive or cheaper product.

From what I hear around more and more are irritated by it. In my opinion the seller in question even loses credibility by doing so and offering tons of bonuses that have nothing to do with the product they're selling...just to sell.

There are other ways to build a product funnel and I'm experimenting with it.

    Just hypothetically...
Would you more likely buy a product through up-sells and down-sells or when you're confronted with a product through content focused on the topic ?

I am one of the ones irritated by pop-ups or re-directions on clicking out of a site. I hesitate even to give a trackback to sites that do that. If I hit the close button it is because I am finished looking at the page.

I also do not base buying decisions on the free stuff offered. If I am not interested in the product I am certainly not going to buy it to get a free bonus.

I don't know that I am representative of the general population, but I think that you are on the right track with the content focused sales page.

I also get quite irritated when i am trying to leave the webpage but the website still prompting me to stay on the page, and when i stayed on the webpage, they sometimes provide me with a lousy offer.
